Switchboard maintenance
A switchboard nobody has mapped, labelled or tested costs you time on the day something fails. We document, label, test and service every board on your site, so the right breaker can be found in seconds and problems are caught before they cause an outage.
Mapped. Labelled. Tested. Reported.
The switchboard service regime
Five parts, done in order for a new site and repeated on a schedule after that.
Distribution maps
We trace your site's electrical distribution from the supply point through every main switchboard, sub-board and distribution board and produce a clear map and single line diagram of what feeds what. Essential for isolation planning, safe shutdowns and solar and battery design.
Legends and labelling
Every circuit identified by testing, then labelled with a proper legend card, so the right breaker can be found and isolated in seconds and your records match what's actually on the wall.
Thermal imaging
Infrared scanning of live switchboards under load to find hot joints, overloaded circuits and failing connections before they cause an outage or a fire. Reported with thermal images, temperature rise and recommended actions. More on thermal imaging.
RCD testing
Push-button and trip-time testing of safety switches to AS/NZS 3760, with a test record for each device, tagging, and a schedule for the next round.
Condition service and report
With the board isolated we check and tighten terminations, clean the enclosure, and inspect breakers, busbars and RCDs for wear and heat damage. You receive a written condition report with photos, test results, a defect list and a recommendation for each board.
Upgrades, repairs and replacement
When servicing isn't enough, we tell you, and we do the work.
Some boards are past saving: obsolete breakers with no spares, damaged busbars, no RCD protection, or a load they were never built for. Others just need a few components and a clean-up. After an assessment we'll give you a straight answer and a price for each option.
- Replacement of failed or obsolete breakers, RCDs and contactors
- RCD protection added to circuits that have none
- Surge protection for sites with sensitive equipment
- Main switchboard and distribution board replacement, including three-phase
- Capacity upgrades for new plant, solar, batteries and EV charging
- Domestic fuse-board to circuit-breaker upgrades
- Certificate of Electrical Safety for every job
Who this is for
Any site where a switchboard failure means lost trading, lost teaching time or a risk to patients or residents.
Our switchboard maintenance clients are mostly schools, medical and allied health practices, aged care facilities, factories and commercial buildings across south-east Melbourne and the Mornington Peninsula. Many started with a single distribution map and now have every board on a schedule.
- Facility and business managers who need current records for insurers and auditors
- Schools with dozens of boards across a campus
- Medical sites with body-protected areas and imaging equipment
- Factories with heavily loaded three-phase boards and motor control
- Body corporates responsible for common-area and car park supply
Switchboard questions
What we get asked about switchboard maintenance, testing and upgrades.
What's involved in a switchboard maintenance visit?
With the board de-energised where possible, we check and tighten connections, clean the enclosure, inspect breakers, RCDs, busbars and terminations for heat damage and wear, verify the legend against what's actually connected, and note anything that needs repair. With the board live and under load we carry out thermal imaging and RCD trip testing. You get a condition report with photos, thermal images, test results and recommendations.
How often should switchboards be maintained?
For most commercial and industrial sites, an annual visit is the sensible baseline, with six-monthly thermal imaging for boards that run heavily loaded or feed critical plant. RCD testing intervals follow AS/NZS 3760 and depend on the type of site. We set the interval for each board when we first assess it.
What is a distribution map and why do I need one?
It's a drawing of how power flows through your site: from the supply point into the main switchboard, out to each sub-board and distribution board, and down to the circuits. Without it, isolating a circuit safely means guesswork and a lot of walking. With it, any electrician can plan a shutdown, find a fault or add new equipment quickly. It's also the starting point for any solar, battery or EV charger design.
My switchboard legend is wrong or missing. Can you fix it?
Yes. We identify every circuit by testing, not by reading the old label, then produce a new legend card for the board and update the site's distribution map to match. Where circuits have been added or changed over the years, this is often the most useful single thing we do on a site.
Does the power need to go off?
Not for thermal imaging or RCD testing; those are done live and under normal load, with the board open under our energised-work procedures and PPE. Tightening connections and internal cleaning need the board isolated, and we plan that with you for a time that suits, often outside operating hours.
Do you upgrade or replace old switchboards?
Yes. We upgrade boards with obsolete or damaged components, add RCD protection where circuits have none, fit surge protection, and replace boards that have reached the end of their life or can't take the load you now put on them. We'll tell you honestly whether a board needs replacing or just servicing.
Do you do domestic switchboard upgrades too?
Yes. For homes we upgrade old fuse boards to modern circuit breakers with RCD protection on every circuit, which is also required before most solar, battery and EV charger installations.
Book a switchboard assessment
Send a photo of your main switchboard with the cover open if you can, and tell us roughly how many boards are on site. We'll come back with a scope and a price.
